Horizon Europe is the name of the European Union's Research and Innovation programme (2021 to 2027)

Some funded projects can be accessed by individuals and organisations who are not partners in the projects. This individual or organisation is called a 'Third Party'.

In these funded projects researchers can apply directly to the projects for different types of activities.

Cascade Funding (Third Party Funding) (Link)

Third Party funding is where a small company (or sometimes a research group) can apply directly to a project for funding.

This type of funding was introduced to help beginners or small companies to get involved in European programmes with a minimum of bureaucracy.

The website above is a list of projects that publish calls for proposals.

The Research Infrastructure programme is designed to allow researchers access the best European research facilities (infrastructures).

A consortium of research infrastructures (e.g. Photonics, Marine Test Centres, Social Science databases etc.) submit a proposal to the Research Infrastructure programme.

If the consortium is successful it receives funding so that researchers can 'Access' their facilities. The projects pays all the travel and accommodation of the researcher using the facilities and provides all the support when using the facilities. An excellent concept - especially for young researchers.

The Marie Curie programme funds the development of Research Careers. One of the Marie Curie actions (Horizon 2020) was called Initial Training Networks. In Horizon Europe these networks will be called Doctoral Training Networks. A consortium of Universities, Research Centres and Companies (usually around 10) submit a proposal requesting funding for a number of PhDs. If the project is funded, researchers can then apply for these PhD positions. The EURAXESS database lists all the vacancies at this moment. EURAXESS also lists other research vacancies.

COST Actions (Networks) (Link)

COST is the name of an EU initiative (in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe) that funds networks of researchers.

COST was established in 1971 - long before the EU research programmes were established.

The main aim of COST networks is to bring European researchers together for workshops, conferences, short staff exchanges etc.

This is an excellent starting point for young researchers. Many European proposals begin in these networks.

Entrepreneurial Training Programme (European Institute for Innovation and Technology) (Link)

The EIT funds its activities through Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICS). Researchers can participate in Entrepreneurial training programmes in the KICs for Health, Digital, Energy, Manufacturing, Raw Materials, Food, Climate and Urban Mobility
