How to Prepare a European Research Plan

Overview of the Programme

The aim of this training programme is to help researchers develop their individual research plans for Horizon Europe (2021-2027).

At the end of the programme, researchers will have a Power Point presentation summarising their research plans for the following four years. This plan can be used as a private plan of the researcher or it can be used to contribute to a Department or Faculty research plan. The Plan can also be used by Research Support Offices to provide specific support to the researcher.

Phase 1: Training Courses for Newcomers to Horizon Europe (2021-2027)

At the end of this phase the researcher will have an understanding of the range of opportunities in the European programmes.

Some researchers may be happy with this information and finish the programme here.

Phase 2: Prepare Individual European Research Plan

In this phase the researcher will be offered an opportunity to prepare their own individual European Research Plan. The researcher will be provided with a Power Point Template to prepare the first draft of their European Research Plan. The researcher will work with their local Support Staff to refine the Plan. The researcher will be given the opportunity to present their Plan to experienced European Researchers and senior Support Staff.

At the end of this phase the researcher will have a 15 minute Power Point presentation summarising their Plan for Horizon Europe. This Power Point presentation can be used as a private document or can be presented to research colleagues at Department or Faculty level.

Phase 3: Presentation of European Research Plans at High Level Events

In this Phase the researcher will be offered the opportunity present their European Research Plan at high level events. They will present 3 slides: 1. Opportunities Identified 2. Strategic Partners identified 3. Plan for the following four years. They presentation typically lasts five minutes.

In this phase researchers will be supported in preparing competitive proposals for Pillar II (Horizon Europe).

Dr. Seán McCarthy

Seán has been active in the Framework programmes since 1980. Since 1995 he has specialised in developing the skills of researchers to understand and participate in European Research Programmes. His courses are designed to help individual researchers and Research Organisations develop 'European Research Plans'.

In 2021 the European Commission published a list of the top 100 universities and research organisations participating in the European Union Framework programmes. Dr. McCarthy has delivered training courses in 78 of these top 100 universities and research centres.

Since 1995 over 130,000 participants have attended his courses in 29 countries. He has presented training courses on the Framework programmes in over 290 research centres throughout Europe (www.hyperion.ie/clients.htm).

Sean has been active in the Framework programmes since 1980. He has been involved in over 150 research proposals to the Framework programmes and has participated in over 60 Framework projects. In 16 of these projects he was the coordinator. Four of Hyperion contracts has been audited by the European Commission. Today he does not participate in the Framework programmes but concentrates on designing and delivering training courses for organizations who participate in the programmes.  More details can be found on www.hyperion.ie/seanmccarthy.htm
